Nappy Bag Essentials

Nappy Bag Essentials

First of all, let me start this post by saying that I don’t pack lightly. For anything. I like to have all my bases covered, you know, just “in case”.
That being said, my babies’ nappy bags aren’t any different.
It’s packed to the brim. But I know I have things covered and can just grab it and go.

I check and restock it often, especially after a trip somewhere.

When I had my 2nd little, I quickly realized that having a one should sling-type bag was not going to work. It was just impossible to run around after a toddler, hold a new bub and carry a bag that easily comes off of your shoulder. I asked some friends and they all suggested a backpack-type nappy bag. The search began to find one that was big enough to keep baby and toddler stuff, that was comfortable and most importantly, would not break the bank. I found a gem at Edgars, but similar ones are also available at Takealot.

So here it is… What I consider to be essentials for our nappy bag:

  • Nappies: I love Pampers Baby-dry nappies. I have 4 nappies in the bag, always. And then a ziplock bag with 3/4 more nappies in the car.
  • Wetwipes: Once again, Pampers wipes with the fliptop works great when out and about.
  • Nappy sacks: Clicks Nappy sacks smell good, and keep soiled and stinky nappies well without leaking.
  • Travel changing mat: Clicks also has a great travel mat. It’s folds into small enough, and fits easily into the bag.
  • Baby Bum Cream: I have two creams that are always in the bag. Sudocrem and Pure Beginnings Bum Cream. Both creams can be used for almost any skin related issue and are extremely versatile. Sudocrem is nice and thick so it forms a great protective layer to protect little bums.
  • Dummies: Never forget the paci. I’ve made this little rookie mistake once. Never again. Nuk dummies have perfect container; if need be, you can sterilise the dummies quick and easy.
  • Zambuk: This little miracle ointment I never leave my house without. Bee sting…Zambuk; Burn…Zambuk; Scratch…Zambuk.
  • Breastpads: If you breastfeed, this is a must. I always have atleast 4 pads in the bag, for safety’s sake.
  • Change of clothes: one short-sleeve vest, one long-sleeve vest, one long-sleeve shirt, one pair of pants, a sunhat, a winter cap
  • Extra bibs: No less than four extra bibs. I seem to have heavy droolers.
  • Snacks: Teething biscuits/dried fruit for baby and usually savory biscuits for Mom/toddler.
  • Extra zip seal/plastic bags: For things that are wet or need to be kept separate from the rest.
  • Mini First Aid Kit/thermometer: You know, just for in case.
  • Lovey: We never go anywhere without or Lily ‘n Jack snuggle bunny. I have one for the crib and one for the bag.
  • Blanket/muslin/breastfeeding cover: My babes both loves a soft fleece blankie, so that’s always in our bag. I do keep a muslin/breastfeeding cover stashed in there as well.
  • Sunscreen: Cetaphil Daylong Kids. It’s perfect for sensitive skin.
  • Linen savers/disposable changing pads: I have an issue with public spaces. So I always put a linen saver down first and the put the changing cover on top of that. Just to keep my germaphobe-ish-ness at bay.
  • Obviously your wallet, keys, phone also go in the bag. 🙂 But that goes without saying.

Here’s a checklist to help you pack your nappy bag.

So that’s it. That’s the essentials which are always in our nappy bag.
