What’s in my pumping bag

So, I started work a week ago. I am adamant to breastfeed for as long as possible, so I am expressing for the little bear at work.
It is particularly challenging as I’m a teacher for 5-6 year olds. When they leave at 13:00, I have about 15 minutes to pump for my little boy.

Something that is super important to make this pumping thing work is a properly packed pumping bag. There are some things that are absolutely essential, which I would not be able to do without.

So here is what’s in my bag:

  • Your breast-pump and the power cord. Check that the cord is in your bag every day before you leave for work. And double check. I use the Medela Maxi Swing, and it works perfectly!
  • A breast-pump bag or any bag that works for housing your pumping supplies. I use the Medela CityStyle that comes with an ice brick and cooler bag.
  • An ice brick and cooler bag to keep your milk cool while you are at work. Any insulated bag will do, with a ice brick. As I said above, I use the Medela CityStyle.
  • I zipseal bag with extra breast pads. I love Pigeon Breast Pads. They are soft and comfortable and don’t leak.
  • Handsanitizer and wetwipes is a must! I wipe and santitize my hands before pumping and if there’s any spillage, the wet wipes are there to clean it up. I love Sorbet’s hand sanitizer (and also hand and nail cream) and a small pack of wipes, like Pick ‘n Pay’s ones, don’t take up too much space and smell lovely.
  • A comfortable nursing bra makes things super easy. Woolworths has a very comfy one that I have in all the colours. With that a nursing top that makes pumping easy, like this one from Cherry Melon. There’s nothing worse than when you are pressed for time and you still have to struggle with clothing. Easy access is key.
  • I always take one or two breastmilk storage bags with, just for in case. I’d rather be prepared for anything. My favorite breastmilk bags are Avent’s ones.
  • I also take at least three zipseal bags with. I usually use one to put my pumping phalanges in when I’m done. And the others are there for spare. Medium size works well for me.
  • Always take a spare plug with. My cord’s connector has a double point so I make sure I take a plug with to use wherever I may have to express that day.
  • And then water and snacks. Lots of water is super important for making breastmilk. On days when I drink less water, I can definitely see a decrease in my pumping output. Breastfeeding also makes me ravenous. Permanently. So I always have a snack with, whether it is chips, an apple or nuts.
  • And then something that I feel is almost the most important. Pictures and videos of my baba. My day tends to be quite chaotic, so it is very important for me to be calm when I pump. Looking at pics of that sweet face, reminds me why I’m doing this and also makes having a let -down a little easier.

Here’s a little checklist to use for your pumping bag:

So that’s my pumping bag essentials. Hope it helps!
